Crown Ridge Health Care Services Inc., we are committed to providing a safe environment for our residents, staff, families, and visitors. Our homes have developed emergency plans in consultation with our community partners, staff, residents, residents’ council, and family council (if applicable) and family members that are compliant with the regulatory requirements. Being prepared in advance of a situation occurring permits our staff to respond immediately and confidently to the emergency. Our home has written procedures for emergency situations that include immediate actions, staff roles and responsibilities, community resources, key contacts, documentation requirements, supply access and provision (including contingency stock and inventory control), lines of command, communication procedures, staffing contingency plans and plans for recovery.
A colour code system to alert staff, residents, visitors to the type of emergency occurring in or affecting our home is used. Emergency response requires a coordinated and trained response therefore our staff are trained upon hire and at least annually and our plans are tested and exercised regularly in accordance with regulations.
The colour coded Emergency Codes established in the home are as follows:
CODE RED – FIRE CODE BLUE – MEDICAL EMERGENCY – (Cardiac Event, Choking) CODE GREEN – EVACUATION CODE BLACK – BOMB THREAT CODE YELLOW – MISSING RESIDENT CODE ORANGE – EXTERNAL DISASTER (Flood, Natural Disaster, Extreme Weather) CODE BROWN – ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD (Chemical Spill, Gas Leaks) CODE WHITE – VIOLENT SITUATION/INTRUDER CODE GREY – LOSS OF ESSENTIAL SERVICES (power outage, loss of water, water advisory, loss of air conditioning or heat) CODE PURPLE – HOSTAGE SITUATION/LOCK DOWN CODE SILVER – INTRUDER/RESIDENT WITH A WEAPON
In the event of an emergency, staff will immediately initiate the required actions to keep residents, family members, visitors and staff safe.
How to respond in the event of an emergency/announcement of an emergency situation:
- Remain with the resident. Stay calm.
- Reassure the resident. Do not panic or rush.
- Keep the door of the room closed. Do not enter the affected area/location. Await direction from staff.
- If in the corridor, common area or affected area, follow instructions from staff.
If you discover fire or smoke:
- Remove the resident(s) and yourself from the room where fire is located.
- Close the door to confine the fire.
- Activate the fire alarm pull station.
- Report the condition to staff.
- Follow instructions of staff.
"DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE"
How to Report an Emergency Situation:
Notify the closest staff member of the situation, stay with resident, and await further direction. Staff will immediately initiate emergency procedures.
Quality Improvement
Our residences are committed to continually enhancing the care and services we provide through a Continuous Quality Improvement program. Through an interdisciplinary quality improvement committee, which includes residents and family members, regular meetings are held to work through quality initiatives in a collaborative manner.
